The Best Selling Books From ABSCBN Publishing

Another year done and more great books were added to our personal libraries.

Forget about Netflix and chillin’, 2016 was another amazing year for Philippine publishing. While the rest of the world was binge-watching various TV series on their devices, Filipinos were clutching, honest-to-goodness printed books. Already coming from a banner year in 2015, Filipino readers were even more spoiled this year with an even more diverse lineup of local books from mostly new and unexpected authors.

In today’s ever changing world dominated by social networking sites, Wi-Fi, and hashtags, more and more Filipinos are now engaged in a new reading habit.

ABS-CBN Publishing’s top five bestsellers for 2016 is led by President Vice: Ang Panggulo ng Pilipinas. In his book debut, the self-appointed Panggulo ng Pilipinas Vice Ganda gives a voice to the voiceless as he proclaims new rules and decrees that will have no effect whatsoever on our lives. “No to PDA!,” “No to #NoFilter!,” and “No to paasa!” are just some of his unorthodox and new rules. Make no mistake though, this is the gay president who values our right to love, life, and “churva,” whatever that means for you. Selling 95,000 copies, “President Vice” is guaranteed to be funny.

“Stupid is Forever” and “Stupid is Forevermore” topped the bestselling charts in 2014 and 2015. And yet, the late great Miriam Defensor Santiago’s book series still continue to sell like hotcakes in 2016 after selling 80,000. She may have passed away early this year, but the beloved senator’s influence is, was, and forever will be boundless. Her collection of quotes, jokes, and speeches will ensure that #MiriamIsForever.

Simply put, “Vince and Kath” is a love story told through text messages. After gaining prominence online as one of the pioneers of the “socialserye” genre, Queen Elly (Jenny Almocera in real life) saw her books come to life in printed format in March. Flash forward to December, the beloved and bestselling 7-book love story, which sold 75,000 copies, is now a major motion picture and part of the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Last May, after the smoke cleared from one of the most intense elections ever, one man stood tall and victorious. His name is Duterte. Compiling President Rodrigo Duterte’s various quotes, statements, jokes, and promises, “The Duterte Manifesto,” which sold 70,000 copies, is an unofficial guide to understanding how the Philippine’s most powerful mind works. And if that’s not enough of an incentive, a portion of the book’s proceeds go directly to Davao Children’s Cancer Fund Inc. – House of Hope.

After helping women cope with the struggles that come with breakups, bestselling author Alex Gonzaga is back with a book that deals with a subject matter that’s both foreign and familiar for a good majority of Pinays – dating. Selling 35,000 copies, Gonzaga’s “We’re Dating. Tama, Mali?!,” discusses the trials and tribulations all females must go through as they traverse the world of modern dating. And as she says inside the book, “Love is a risk, and dating is the test that will help you decide if you want to take that risk.”

The honorable mention, which have been in the bestsellers list of bookstores multiple times throughout the year by selling a minimum of 10,000 copies, include LAKOMPAKE by Senyora, #GOALS by Andrea Brillantes, HABANG WALA PA SILA by Juan Miguel Severo and THE WRONG MESSAGE by Queen Elly.

Saving Sally: A Visually Entertaining Love Story

Saving Sally: 9/10

Saving Sally is a unique type of film, a first of its kind in the MMFF. The story was simple, but the way the movie was crafted was really good and well executed. From the acting department to the effects the movie was very satisfying.

Rhian Ramos and Enzo Marcos were able to connect and engage the audiences despite the movie being 98% english, the movies storytelling was very light and fluid.

Watching this movie I felt like I am watching a cartoon network series, I just hope that this will not be the last time we will see this kindof movie genre.

Vince And Kath And James: Simplicity is Beauty

Vince & Kath & James 9/10(12/28/16)

Vince & Kath & James is a modern day retelling of this generations love stories. It runs in the premise of Vince, Kath, and James’ love triangle affair and their family struggles, from how Kath met James then suddenly she fell in love with Vince and because of that conflicts arise as their family problems enters the picture.

This is movie is the dark horse of this years’ film festival, why? Because as far as I know this movie is not really meant for the film festival, it was supposed to be the November 30 offering of Star Cinema, but things turned around after the first two entries of SC didn’t made the cut.

Vince & Kath& James is not the boldest and the bravest of all the movie, it doesn’t have a complex story, and it only has a simple storyline to follow. But that simplicity made it more beautiful, fluid, and light. Also even though VKJ is a formula movie (that has kilig, drama, etc.) it was a well-executed one, you wouldn’t feel unsatisfied.

Actually of all of Star Cinema movies this 2016 Vince & Kath & James is a stand out, aside from a well done storyline it is the first time that they gave a lead role to newbies after years’.

I commend Julia Barretto for delivering such a great performance in this movie, I believe she gave justice to the role of Kath. She has finally probed that she really has a place in the industry, as she is slowly moving away from the shadows of her surname and establishing herself.

Joshua Garcia for me delivers an outstanding performance, he really stood out in this movie. But there are time he is channeling too much John Lloyd Cruz on his acting, though it wasn’t bad, it’s just that I sometimes don’t see “Joshua” instead I am seeing “John Lloyd”. Joshua is slowly becoming the next big thing, maybe next year he could be a perfect leading man.

For Ronnie Alonte, I actually didn’t expected so much from him since I know he lacks experience in acting. There are scenes that shows his inexperience, but I guess he was able to redeemed his self in the confrontation scene, he was not left behind even with Joshua’s subtle acting and Julia’s emotional attacks he was able to level his acting to that of the two.

All in all the movie was well executed, simplicity is beauty indeed kudos to Direk Ted Boborol for doing such a remarkable direction for this movie that made it the best Star Cinema movie this year. I just hope Star Cinema continue this kind of film making, simple, fluid, and well-executed.

Seklusyon: "Ang Pipiliin Ng Tao Ay Ang Madali Hindi Ang Mabuti"

Seklusyon 8/10

Seklusyon is not your ordinary horror movie, it’s not the type that will make you scream, but instead this movie will dig in your soul deeply specially. The movie uses the certain elements such as church practice to put the horreurs in the story, if you are a devoted catholic you’ll find this movie a bit disturbing.

Erik Matt made Seklusyon for the audiences to think out of the box, the movie won’t spoon feed its viewers of what will happened to the characters or what will happened next to the story. It is full of twist and turns, it’s just that I felt at the end of the movie that I was left behind still lost in the forest where the character of Ronnie Alonte ran through.
I don’t know if it is because of the cuts they did that made the movie quiet hard to understand, there are parts of the story that I think lacked in details.
The quality of the movie is at par with other international movies, the sound effects, production design was really, the feels of the movie will really bring you back in the post-world war era.
Ronnie Alonte didn’t fail to meet my expectations, for a newbie he did a good job portraying the lead character Miguel, I love the way he attacked the character, quiet but still very expressive through the eyes and actions. Ronnie fits in this kind of movies, serious and subtle.

Rhed Bustamante delivered a very remarkable performance, for a child actress the way she acted in this movie really surprised me, she is really a brilliant actress at her young age.  Meanwhile, Phoebe Walker’s subtle character really left a mark in this movie.
All in all the movie will not shock you, but it will leave you full of questions, questions about your faith, about the statement “Pinipili ng tao kungano ang madali at hindi kung ano ang mabuti “.

Die Beautiful: A Celebration of Life and Laughter

Die Beautiful

9.5/10
Die Beautiful tells the journey of Trisha Echivaria the beki beauconera that dreamt of becoming a Beauty Queen someday.
The film is actually a series of flashbacks that was tailored to perfection to perfectly retell the life of Trisha, these flashbacks were well used to fill in the back story of Trisha from the time she died back to her younger years.
I already saw movies that used flashbacks to show the audiences the back story of a character, but as far as I remember those movies failed to execute it properly that it made the flashbacks turn their story a bit off and full of loopholes and missing parts. But for the first time, I was finally able to see a movie that perfectly executed and used the flashbacks to celebrate the life of a great character like Trisha without asking too much of what had happened to the character cause the flashbacks were able to retell the journey of Trisha.
The role of Trisha Echivaria perfectly fits to Paolo Ballesteros, I guess I should say the role was Tailor made for her, as he was able to deliver the role as natural as possible. There are scenes that I could really feel the emotions coming from him, the character went through the hardest to happiest times and Paolo was able to share with the audience the feeling of Trisha.
One character that stood out aside from Trisha is Barbs her best friend played by Christian Bables. Barbs role made a mark on me because she was the epitome of a true BFF, her role completed Trisha. Christian Bables delivers an excellent job in portraying the character, his portrayal was very natural that many thought he is really gay that’s how convincing he is. Christian’s exceptional performance is worthy of an award, I could be biased here, but I couldn’t think of anybody else to award the Best Supporting Actor aside from him.
All in all Die Beautiful was a really great movie, one of the best I saw. It is really deserving of all the international awards and recognition it received in the past months. Actually, I am still in awe with how great Die Beautiful was crafted, it differs itself from other comedy movies we usually see in the MMFF, this one is a comedy movie with a heart and soul that will teach you many lessons in life.
Kudos to Direk Jun Lana and the rest of the production of Die Beautiful for coming up with this kind of quality movie.

Sunday Beauty Queen: A Cinematic Docu That WIll Touch Your Heart

Review: 12/14/16

Sunday Beauty Queen 10/10

Sunday Beauty Queen is a docudrama on a larger picture that shows larger than life visualization of the triumphs and struggles of OFW's not just in Hongkong, but worldwide.

Sunday Beauty Queen doesn't have any celebrities or actors to play any roles, they just have real people portraying themselves, and telling their real stories, and I think that made this film beautiful and very engaging to the audiences.

There's that genuineness in this film that shows a lot of heart that will really touch you, especially the realization that being an OFW is more of a struggle than being triumphant, that there's a lot of things an OFW needs to sacrifice in exchange of a bigger income that they think will give a better and more comfortable life to their families.

Sunday Beauty Queen also raises awareness of certain issues of OFW's that our government is failing to recognize and to solve, the movie is very timely since it is for the Christmas season that we all know the season where OFW's remit more money that help our economy.

The movie is for all, not just to those who have relatives abroad, but also to those people who don't know what these OFW's are experiencing  abroad. Hands down Sunday Beauty Queen is a high quality docudrama, from the cinematography to sounds and musical scoring the movie was well crafted and because of it Direk Babyruth was able to squeeze out the emotions not just of the characters, but also for those who will watch it.

This is the kind of movie that Filipino movie goers must see on Christmas day, more than a good laugh there should always a realization and a good lesson that a movie goer can bring outside the cinema and share it with other people.

Oro: Justice is Elusive like Gold

Review: 8.5/10 (12/20/16)

"Oro" is not the type of movie that you'll watch on the opening day of the Film Festival, but it is a must watch, why? because the "Oro" raises certain issues with regards the mining industry, on how some people abuses their power to take control of people who are powerless. Another reason is that, being based on true events "Oro" amplifies the search for justice for those victims of the massacre that happened in the town of Caramoan.

When it comes to acting Irma Adlawan and Joem Bascon did really well on their characters considering that they aren't the original actors for their respective roles, Mercedes Cabral was exceptional specially in her breakout scenes.

There are certain thinga in the movie that I dídn't like, first the camera angles used were  though I believe it was up for a visual representation or something like that but I find it uncomfortable it somewhat made me a bit dizzy.

All in all, though I believe the movie is not for the whole family because of some scenes not suitable for kids, it is still a must see movie, the story was good and worthy of your time and money this Holiday season.

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2: A Well Thought Out Comedy Movie

REVIEW:
#AngBabaeSaSepticTank2
Rating: 9/10 (12-16-15)

Five years after the first movie #AngBabaeSaSepticTank2 did not fail to differ itself from the first one, from the serious-dark comedy themed “How to make an internationally acclaimed indie movie” in 2011 to a lighter one “How to make a blockbuster romantic movie”.
Though the brand of comedy used in the part 2 was a bit lighter I still could say that it was well written and well thought out, it’s not like the usual comedy movie we see every MMFF that’s full of gags and non-sense.
#AngBabaeSaSepticTank2 is a proof that comedy movies can also have a concrete and meaningful story, actually the movie is taking a swipe against movie producers who kept on doing formula movies that should have a “Kilig at Katatawanan” factor to make it a box office success. By the way the movie is a satire that’s why they the put pun in every scenes they do.
The narrative of the movie is the same as the first one, Eugene suggest and then Direk Rainier visualizes that’s how the story go in the movie. Though it was simple the actors deliver so well, even those who only had a cameo.
Eugene Domingo delivers a stellar performance in this movie I think she is at her best in this one since I think she is in her element again, I got two favorite scenes of her in the movie that you should see, the first was the “Three Types Of Hugot” Acting scene and the Restaurant Confrontation scene near the end of the movie. (P.S. The movie ended with a bang! That’s why should really watch this movie)
Joel Torre was a surprise in the movie I think, I mean his scenes were really good. Kean Cipriano was able to keep the character of Direk Rainier, but this time it’s deeper and darker.
All in all the movie was one of the best movie I saw this year, that’s why I gave it a 10/10 ratings, though it was made a bit more commercialize to fit into the story the movie still reflects and sends the message that comedy movies should have a concrete and definite story before it is shown to the movie goers.
It also wants to tell the audiences that no matter how good a movie is and no matter how many awards it gets from different festivals abroad if the Filipino audience wouldn’t support these movies nothing will happen to our movie industry, we will be repeatedly fed up with non-sense and for profit only movies.
Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2 is one movie worthy of your money this Christmas Day.

Many of the attendees were excited to watch the movie, as the topic of the film was very timely and relevant today, people look forward on seeing the David versus Goliath type of story as Nora Aunor's character Mercy, tries to sÄ“k justice for the tragedy that is destroying her family.

The film also stands as a statement for a family’s quest for justice and their journey to regain dignity by sticking and standing up for one another. The whole cast and crew whose passion and heart in letting the public know and understand the importance of family were all present to celebrate and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Scientific fact: Women are more attracted to men with facial hair.

Science says it. Men with facial hair are more attractive. A study in the 70s and two more recent ones conducted by Neave and Shields in 2008 and Dixson and Brooks in 2013 all came up with the same conclusion:

Most women find men with a stubble or a five-o’clock shadow very, very attractive. Although the women’s perception of male attractiveness changed according to the amount and length of men’s facial hair, most women in the study found men with a moderate amount of facial hair to be the most attractive. Some women did prefer men with no facial hair, but to the majority, men with no facial hair were not very attractive and seemed the least likely romantic partners. Women perceived full bearded men to be aggressive, more mature and a bit too much to handle.

The study showed that, bottom line, facial hair matters. 8,250 women in the study who rated the physical attractiveness of men based on the amount or absence of hair on their faces can’t be wrong.

What do the study findings imply? Guys who want to get noticed and be more sexually appealing can surely benefit from some masculine stubble on their cheeks. Just by changing or adding facial hair, a guy could well attract the type of relationship partner he seeks.

For many men, however, the problem is more complicated than that. The reality is the amount of available facial hair varies from guy to guy. Some men have facial hair that grows in patches, some men have hair growth where they do not want them, and some men are so baby-faced, they hardly have any facial hair at all. The truth is facial hair growth pattern is largely controlled by one’s genes. Either you have virile hair growing on your face; have bald, patchy spots on your face; or have no facial hair at all.

But worry no more. Whatever your facial hair growth pattern is, MAXiM Hair Restoration can help you achieve the perfect, rugged look that you’ve been dreaming of.

MAXiM Hair Restoration does not just do hair transplants on the scalp, it can grow hair on other parts of the body where a client wants hair or more hair. Facial hair in well-groomed stubbles, a full beard, thicker eyebrows, chest hair, and/or a moustache can be achieved in just one session at the MAXiM Clinic, with a licensed and experienced plastic surgeon performing the procedure.

Happy clients have walked off the clinic and reported more masculine confidence because of reconstructed facial hair. They reported acquiring a greater perception of their masculinity as their facial hair increased.

“MAXiM’s Facial Hair Transplant is safe and effective. It can give you the beard and moustache style that you want to have. It would be advisable to be aware of the shape of your face before choosing the type of beard or facial hair growth prior to the procedure. Our plastic surgeons have great aesthetic sense and can help you in this regard.

Square or circular faces should go for a beard shape that lengthens the face. Those with rectangular or oblong faces should keep the hair short at the bottom of the chin,” said Mac Fadra, CEO of MAXiM Hair Restoration.

MAXiM Hair Restoration is the Manila branch of the New-York-based hair transplant company with the mantra “Hair is all we do and we do it well.” It has been doing business in the Philippines since 2005 and has offices in New York City and Chicago in the US; Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and other Asian markets.

Facial hair reconstruction – beards, mustache and stubbles for men and eyebrows for women –are among the most popular procedures at the clinic.

Minute To Win It: Last Kid Standing

“Minute to Win It” serves up more fun and excitement this Christmas season as it once again gives kids a shot at winning big prizes in its “Last Kid Standing” edition, which begins on Monday (Dec 19) on ABS-CBN.

Like in “Last Man Standing,” eight kiddie players will battle it out in a series of six challenges with no time limit, using only ordinary objects that can be found at home and in the office. The player who is last to accomplish or cannot finish the challenge will be eliminated after each challenge, until only two players remain.

These two kiddie players will go straight to the Head-to-Head Challenge, where they will face off in three nerve-wracking challenges.

The competition will be made even more exciting because the first player who completes each challenge first gets to win toys, gadgets, appliances, or trips to different local and international destinations.

The player who wins two out of the three games in the Head-to-Head challenge will play the Ultimate Challenge, where he or she will be given the chance to win the P1 million-jackpot prize.
Kapamilya child stars Clarence Delgado, Raikko Mateo, Alonzo Muhlach, Vito Quizon, Marco Masa, Esang de Torres, Chun Sa Jung, and Nhikzy Calma are just some of the first Kapamilya child stars who will play in the show, and will face off with regular players who successfully auditioned.

Since “Minute to Win It” returned to television last July, it has consistently rated highly and remains to be the most watched game show in the country. This year, it has produced two millionaires: actresses Jodi Sta. Maria and Meg Imperial.

But aside from the program giving away prizes and helping out Kapamilya players, its host Luis Manzano has also given back to some of those who participated in its challenges. Luis has paid for the dentures of Tatay Roman, a dedicated father and sari-sari store owner. Luis also donated a tricycle to Kuya Onio, and paid for the birthday party of his daughter.
Don’t miss “Minute to Win It: Last Kid standing” beginning Monday (Dec 19) Mondays to Fridays on ABS-CBN
