Review: Woke Up Like This

Woke Up Like This

Director: Joel Ferrer

Starring: Lovi Poe and Vhong Navarro

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy

Woke Up Like This tackles the story of two different people from both world, they are Sabrina a top model who is quite mean to people who help her special her yaya, and Nando an aspiring basketball player who is very independent that he forgets to value the people around him.
Things will turn around after they met an old man that will teach them a lesson that eventually changed their lives.

Woke Up Like This uses a simple yet very effective comedy, I liked how the humor was delivered here and how it connected itself to the audiences. I also love how Regal Films is bringing back comedy movie that teaches us audiences’ lessons and values, these kind of comedy films are rare these days.

On the acting department, Lovi Poe was the bomb that surprised us, since this is her first full length comedy movie my expectations were really not that high, but she was able impress not only me but also other people who are watching inside the cinema. This is so far my favorite Lovi Poe movie, she went all out and no holds barred in this one.

Vhong Navarro delivered the goods as well, but I felt he wasn’t able to justify his portrayal of Sabrina’s character that sometimes I feel he was portraying a gay role already, anyway he still made me laugh with his antics and of course the humor is always there.

Another character that stood out for me is Bayani Agbayani, he brought genuine laughter in his scenes.

Over all Woke Up Like This is a good movie, the writers Jeps Gallon and Joma Labayen were able to incorporate their comic skills as they were able to make such a hilarious comedy movie, and also kudos to Direk Joel Ferrer as he was able to execute the movie well and he was able to show a different Lovi Poe.

Woke Up Like This is now showing in cinemas near you.

Review: Birdshot

Birdshot

Director: Mikhail Red

Starring: Mary Joy Apostol, Arnold Reyes, Ku Aquino, and John Arcilla

Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Drama

Birdshot tackles the story of Maya (Mary Joy Apostol) who lived in a farm beside a protected bird sanctuary, she lives with her father Diego (Ku Aquino) and they serve as the caretaker of the land. Things get difficult for the father and daughter as Maya unknowingly killed a Philippine Eagle, from there the characters of Mendoza (John Arcilla) and Domingo (Arnold Reyes) enters as they were transferred from a mysterious case of a missing bus were 10 farmers were aboard.

From there many discoveries unfolded and the search for justice gets tougher as the case of the missing Philippine Eagle leads them to a more horrifying and aghast discoveries.

_

What I like about Birdshot is the raising of awareness of saving the critically endangered Philippine Eagle and also the awareness that there are lots of farmers that are enslaved in these haciendas. I also love how they used the killing of the Philippine Eagle to symbolize freedom and justice that is slowly fading away in the story.

I am really amazed on how a young girl like Mary Joy Apostol was able to portray such a brave character like Maya, I love how she was able to own the character it was subtle but very effective. Another thing amazed me was her ability and posture in holding that shotgun they owned it is as if she was a veteran in using the gun.

The three guys, John Arcilla, Ku Aquino, and Arnold Reyes delivered such magnificent and remarkable portrayal of their character, it was like a boxing of acting talent.

The cinematography was superb! Almost all the shots specially the scenic shots were beautifully executed and it is very enticing and refreshing to the eyes.

The only thing I really noticed that lacked in the movie is the timeline, there was no definite year nor a definite location of the movie. At first I thought it was in Davao because of the Bird Sanctuary and the Eagle, but when they said that the missing bus travels two hours to Manila it wasn’t Davao after all.

Birdshot is really a nice film, it raises certain awareness and causes that we are almost forgetting anything about it, like the comprehensive agrarian reform that would’ve give land to the farmers and also the conservation and saving of the environment as many species will be critically endangered or worst extinct when we don’t take care of our environment.

Watch Birdshot in cinemas near you until August 22!

9/11 (2017 Movie)

September 11 or 9/11 is a date that has become a reference point in American history. It is a moment by which our lives are divided into “before” and “after.” What we experienced and shared as a people on that fateful day has no equal in our past.

Based on true events, 9/11 tells the story of five (5) people trapped in an elevator in the World Trade Center. As the sun rises in the New York City on the morning of September 11, 2001, the day seems no different.

In the World Trade Center (WTC), a billionaire sits in his attorney’s office awaiting a divorce hearing against his wife. In a west side apartment, a bike messenger kisses a 5-year old daughter and sings her “Happy Birthday” before leaving for work. A maintenance man gets dispatched to help a WTC tenant with his lock. In an Upper East Side apartment, a young model musters the courage to break up with her sugar daddy. As random as random can be, these individuals step into a crowded WTC elevator.

Wrapped up in their own world, they all ride silently hearing only the sound of the elevator giving notice of each floor. When the elevator stops on the 34th floor, it empties leaving only these five behind. Moments later…. their world changes as the collision of a jet into the North Tower incapacitates the elevator.

During these critical minutes, a story of courage, faith and the will to live unfolds.
Starring Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men), Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Act), Luis Guzman (The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3), Gina Gershon (Showgirls), Wood Harris (Justified), Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge (BBC), Welcome to New York), Olga Fonda (The Vampire Diaries) and Bruce Davison (ABC TV’s The Fosters).

“9/11” movie opens in Philippine cinemas September 13 from Rafaella Films International.

Review: Bar Boys

Bar Boys

Director: Kip Oebanda

Starring: Rocco Nacino, Enzo Pineda, Kean Cipriano, and Carlo Aquino

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Bar Boys tackles the story of four legal management graduates who took up law and they are Torran (Rocco Nacino), Chris (Enzo Pineda), Josh (Kean Cipriano), and Erik (Carlo Aquino). All of them had the fair share of unfortunate events from taking the admission test to their Law School up to the Bar Exam that will test not only their friendship, but also their will to finish the thorny road to being an attorney at law.

This is so far my favorite Pista movie for three reasons, first is that I can relate to it since our family is a family of lawyers.

The second reason is that Bar Boys got a great ensemble from the lead down to the bit players they all did very well especially the three lead characters. I just love how Rocco Nacino delivers his role as Torran who Is a cocky and a happy go lucky guy that is always there to help, Enzo Pineda surprisingly impressed me in this movie (So far this is his best movie) he really carried himself making him look like a real law student, Carlo Aquino hands down is really a great actor he effortlessly move from the comic side to the dramatic side of the movie. (P.S Angeli Canapi brought the house down, she really gave an electrifying performance that I can’t stop laughing at her antics in this movie).

The third reason why I love Bar Boys is that the story was well written and well executed, though there are four main characters it was able to show the story of each characters, there personal struggles up to their struggles in school.

Also the movie was well researched, from the classroom set up, the terror professor, grading system, the way law student behave and their attitude, and also even the fraternities they were also able to tackle it.

Bar Boys deserve the A grade they received from the Cinema Evaluation Board, this is worthy your money and this will also give you a glimpse of what Law School look like, it will take you to a walk in the park, the Jurassic Park.

Bar Boys is set to Premiere this August 16-22 in cinemas nationwide and this is also one of the official entries to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

Review: 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

100 Tula Para Kay Stella

Director: Jason Paul Laxamana

Starring: Bela Padilla & JC Santos

Genre: Romance, Drama

100 Tula Para Kay Stella tells the story of Fidel (JC Santos) and of course Stella (Bela Padilla), the two met back in 2004 in their freshmen year, from then and there Fidel instantly felt that Stella is the one for him but Fidel was struck with a speech defect that hinders him to profess his love for Stella that they ended up as best buddies in college.

First of all I would like to say that JC Santos and Bela Padilla delivered so great in this movie, they owned their respective characters and gave justice to it.

The movie started good it gives that nostalgic feeling back in the hay days of Friendster, Pre Smartphone era, the songs specially the Rivermaya song “241”. I also love how the movie gave away so many feelings and emotions to the audiences especially the way that Bela and JC delivered it was so real.

It is not the typical hugot movie you usually see, the hugot was so deep that it will let you experience what the characters are feeling. The movie surprised me, especially in the last part and it’s for you to find out.

All in all the movie is a must watch, if Kita Kita gave you kilig with comedy this one will give you kilig with tears. 100 Tula Para Kay Stella is set to be shown in the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino starting August 16-22 in all cinemas nationwide starring of course Bela Padilla and JC Santos, directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, from Viva Films.
